"New Year's Eve" was a very significant day for my family. In fact, I spent the entire day with my family. Initially, we had made plans to attend a big fancy party at my friend's house. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we had to cancel our plans and had to celebrate the New Year by ourselves. So you may be wondering, what is so special about celebrating the New Year with one's family? Believe me, it was most probably the most memorable time I had ever spent with my family.
I woke up rather late that day, and I had to quickly take a shower as we were going out for shopping. After an unbelievably long shopping spree at "Vivo City", we returned home all weary and sleepy. I was literally dying of boredom during those few hours, but my spirits rose as my father suggested that we go for a car ride. Just a week before that day, my father bought a car. Unfortunately, he did not have a Singaporean driving license then. Just the day before, he passed his theory test and converted his Indian license to a Singaporean one. This was not any ordinary car ride that you would go for any other day. It was going to be our first car ride in our very own car.
So we rested for a while, and then we left home. We made our way down to the car park. There lay our car, stylish as ever but a little bit dusty. We got in and my father ignited the engine. My father had not driven for 8 years so it did not come as a surprise to us that he was rather panicky and nervous. He decided to drive around the car park so that he would get the feel of it. Despite the fact that I was sitting at the back, I could sense that my father was really enjoying the smoothness of the suave car. I clearly remember something hilarious that happened while my father was driving in and out of the car park. There was another car that drove in to the car park to drop someone and then it came out of the car-park from the other side. While this happened, the driver saw my father driving in and out two times. The look on his face said it all. "What is wrong with that guy?! He is crazy!" was what he was most probably thinking.
After my father felt confident, he finally drove out of our condominium and drove to the main road. We felt slightly insecure because my father had not drive a car since the past 8 years, but after a few moments of anxiety, we felt so much more secure. We knew that we were truly in the safe hands of my father. After an extremely pleasant drive around the Tanjong Rhu area, we returned home, joyful and lively.
Upon reaching home, after having a great time in the car, we decided to have a barbecue on our portable barbecue set. Unfortunately, we did not have a complete barbecue as we were only able to barbecue some corn cobs and potatoes. This was because we ran out of gas in the midst of the barbecue. You might be thinking " Oh, what a sad way to welcome the New Year." You're wrong. On the 13th floor of my condominium, is a sky-garden. It provides us with an extremely broad overview of the "Marina Bay", where the fireworks would go off. Just five minutes before the New Year, we went up to the sky-garden, to find that we were not the only ones there. The dazzling display of fireworks symbolized the good things that were to follow this year. Who knew that spending such an important day with just your family could be such a treat. Especially with a family like no other.
(: (My father's driving reminded me of the song 'Shut Up and Drive') :)
